GBR women’s head coach Theo Nousios looks back at Taipei 2017 -

After a successful World University Games for Great Britain’s senior women, head coach Theo Nousios reflects on some outstanding results which saw GB achieve a top 10 finish…

“I am really proud of the players. The girls managed in a short time to come together as a team and be competitive.

“We always knew the standard of the competition would be very high.

“Nine of the 12 teams had a lot of players who competed at the recent World Championships and the top four teams in our group ranked in the top five spots in this tournament.

“Strength, decision making under pressure and inexperience were our weaknesses. However, GB ladies still performed above everyone’s expectations to draw against New Zealand and Greece, games we now know we could have won.

“On our final day in Taipei, the prevailing thought is that GB water polo teams belong to this big stage.

“There is an abundance of talent in British water polo, but long-term financial support is needed if we want to establish GB as one of the top nations in the world.

“The challenge is now for everyone within the water polo community to realise why the last two weeks have been good for GB water polo and to not overlook the problems.”
