Sanford Parks Lido hosted the 2018 British Champs
Cheltenham through to the finals for the men and Manchester and Otter through for the women.
CoM Women’s British Champs 2018
In the women’s event Otter went down 8-7 to Manchester in the final. Having trailed for much of the match Manchester had a fantastic last quarter to turn the result around. In the third place match, Liverpool and Coventry drew 6-6, Liverpool edging through 5-4 on penalties to take the Bronze medal.
Solihull WPC Men’s British Champs 2018
The British League men’s champions Solihull completed a superb double when they defeated Cheltenham 11-5 in the final. After taking an early 3-0 Solihull remained in control for the rest of the match. City of Manchester beat last year’s Champions Lancaster 10-7 to claim third place.
Southwark London Youth Games Winners 2018
The London Youth Games is Europe’s largest annual youth sports event with over 136,000 participants and 4,000 volunteers every year. Fourteen London boroughs entered teams for the water polo competition which took place in June at Crystal Palace. Three pitches were in use. The gold medal was won by Southwark, Barnet took silver and Bromley took bronze. The Plate was won by Wandsworth. Well done to everyone who competed in this great showcase event.
Having fun with Drenched Mini Polo
A massive day of junior development water polo took place at Splashpoint in Worthing on Saturday 9th June. The mini polo festival was organised by Drenched Mini Polo, which is run by Worthing senior player Matt White and featured teams from Bognor, Littlehampton, Shoreham, Washington, Worthing and a South East Region girls’ development squad.
The day started with an under 10’s mini polo tournament at the Wadurs pool in Shoreham which was hugely enjoyed by boys and girls who were playing in their first competitive matches.
In the afternoon the focus moved to Splashpoint where two competitions for the under 12’s and under 14’s were held. The younger age group played a series of exciting matches in the diving pool with the older boys and girls playing in the main pool.
During the day all of the youngsters involved had the opportunity of playing in a series of well organised matches that were enjoyed by a large, enthusiastic and appreciative crowd.
At the conclusion of the mini polo the latest South East region water polo academy training session took place and as a result well over 100 boys and girls were playing water polo at Splashpoint during the day which is a remarkable achievement.
A number of the younger boys and girls are already beginning to progress to the Worthing junior development program and we are sure that as the mini polo continues to develop this will happen on a more regular basis.

Great to see that Kent hosted their annual Water Polo Festival on 16 June featuring competitions for U12, U16 and U14 teams from all over the county. The afternoon started with the under 12 tournament (2007 and younger). This tournament had 3 teams entering Sevenoaks/Bexley, Hythe and Faversham. All of the games were close including a 3 all draw when Hythe played Faversham. The results of all games were so close that is went down to goal difference to confirm who won the competition. Hythe took top spot, Faversham 2nd and Sevenoaks/Bexley 3rd.
Next up it was the turn of the under 14 tournament (2005 and younger). Again there were 3 teams competing and they were Sevenoaks/ Monson, Hythe and Faversham. With longer games in this age group compared to the under 12 (4 quarters of 5 minutes) fitness was very important. The results for this age group were also very close with Faversham v Hythe and Sevenoaks/Monson v Faversham both finishing in draws. Again is went down to goal difference to confirm who won the competition. Hythe were the winners with Faversham second and Sevenoaks/Monson third.
Last up was the under 16 tournament (2003 and younger). It was another close tournament and the third to be decided on goal difference. Hythe A came first, Sevenoaks/Monson second, Beckenham third and Hythe B fourth. A great event also raising £200 to go towards the development of the sport in Kent.
Just a reminder that the Time Out Water Polo Camp starts on 28 July. It is for boys and girls born 2001-2004 coached by GB Senior men and women players Dan Paddon and Izzy Howe overseen by GB Senior Women’s coach Theo Nousios and 2016 “Water Polo Coach of the Year” Andy McGinty. The itinerary looks fun and exhausting in equal measure with 2 pool sessions per day and other activities planned. A great opportunity for our younger players to skill up in a safe and fun environment.
Rotherham Metro Water Polo Club is hosting their 9th annual 4-a-side Water Polo tournament at Hathersage Open Air Swimming Pool on 7th July with camping at the nearby Bamford Recreation Ground where there will also be a post tournament BBQ. The winning team will receive £100 in cash and a crate of beer! Please contact the club or Norman Leighton (norman.leighton@swimming.org) for further information.
City of Manchester will be running its hugely successful annual Water Polo Festival again this summer. The event is for athletes born from 2004-2006. Last year over 400 young players competed in 36 teams. If you would like to enter please see the details below. If you want to watch a great day of water polo please do come along to the Manchester Aquatics Centre on 7 July.

Want to become a water polo coach? ASA Southwest is running a course starting on 20 July 2018 at Cheltenham. This is a blended course programme which means that learners complete part of the theory elements online. This work is assessed and will need to be completed prior to attending the face-to-face practical elements at Cheltenham College on 28 August to 1 September. Learners must be aged 18 or above and hold a Swim England Water Polo Assistant (Coaching), an ASA Level 1 Award (QCF) in Coaching Water Polo, ASA Level 1 Water Polo Assistant (Coaching) or equivalent. Our Team Mates in America
The summer break is coming to an end and our English athletes will soon be making their way back across the Atlantic for the Fall Semester. The men’s season starts at the end of August. Ashley Castle will be playing for San José State for his Junior year.
The women’s season starts in January 2019 but the girls will be returning to a heavy training schedule. Our girls in America this Fall are –
• Rosie Huck (City of Manchester) – Arizona State “Sun Devils”
• Megan Clarke (City of Coventry) – Marist College
• Kathy Rogers (Otter) – Michigan University
• Mhari Nrthen (Otter) – Hawaii
