Our June news is out! -

Welcome to our club news for June 2017.

British Championships

Congratulations to everyone who competed at the British Championships this weekend.  It was an excellent weekend of water polo at Sandford Parks Lido in Cheltenham.  The outdoor venue provided an excellent backdrop for some fantastic water polo and the organisers even ensured some sunshine on the second day. A great crowd provided a wonderful atmosphere, perhaps aided by some very close games!

Gold medallists, City of Liverpool Women’s team

Rosie Morris

In the women’s event Liverpool Lizards retained the crown.  The victory was the last match of Rosie Morris who has decided to retire from top class competitive water polo.  Rosie has had a distinguished career in GB water polo competing in the 2012 Olympics and Captaining the England Team that won Gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2014.  In honour of her achievements Rosie was named BWPL Female Player of the year 2016/17.

The silver medal was won by City of Coventry with City of Manchester picking up the bronze medal. London’s Otter came 4th.

Lancaster Men’s team winners

The Men’s event was won by Lancaster City Water Polo club who beat the host club, City of Cheltenham to be crowned as British Champions 2017. The close game ended 12-11 and was a great way to wrap up a brilliant weekend of sport.  Congratulations to Lancaster on their historic win!

The bronze medal was taken by Invicta, who beat City of Manchester in 3rd/4th play-off match in the men’s competition.

In the run up to the Championships, it was great to see some clubs gaining some media attention. City of Cheltenham invited BBC’s Mike Bushell to train with them.  He described the sport as ‘fast, furious and occasionally brutal’! His piece was very amusing to watch and was broadcast during the BBC Breakfast programme on 20 May and can be seen on the England Water Polo Facebook site.  I think we can all agree it was great for water polo to gain some national attention in the lead up to the championships.

City of Coventry also invited BBC Midlands Today to join one of their training sessions in the run up to the British Championships. Their piece gave a lovely insight to the players and the sport; they also featured on Free Radio Coventry & Warwickshire.

Our 14 yr old plays with London Otters and competes in NAGS and with London regional. She is looking for a summer camp to improve her Spanish as well as her water polo skills. Please pass on any information on quality programs in Spain. She is advanced in Spanish so we would like as many opportunities for her to speak in Spanish . We are looking for either day or board ing camps.
    Thank you

From time to time we are sent deails of camps abroad and in particular BIWPA are proactive in contacting us with information about camps in Barcelona which may meet your needs. I am sure you are familiar with the organisation but if not then we suggest having a look at http://www.biwpa.com/en/waterpolo-campus. We hope that this is helpful
