GBR U19 Junior Women European Championships Zagreb Aug 2024 Results

Game 1, Germany v GB

Great Britain’s U19 women lost to Germany 10-7 (0-2, 3-2, 1-2, 2-0, 4-1P) after penalties were needed to decide their opening game of the European Championships in Zagreb on Saturday morning.
Lily Ross looked to have put Great Britain on the road to victory at the end of the third, when she scored in the final second to open up a two-goal lead (4-6), but Germany hit back in the fourth to force the shootout.

Before the penalties, Harriet Dickens led the scoring with two, while there were also goals for Amelie Perkins (1), Amelie Cornell (1), Lily Ross (1) and Isobelle Robb (1).

Game 2, GB v Bulgaria

Great Britain’s U19 women powered past Bulgaria 32-6 (9-3, 8-1, 6-2, 9-0) to win their second game at the European Championships in Zagreb on Saturday evening. The dominant performance was the perfect response to the penalty defeat to Germany earlier and Great Britain were in control against Bulgaria from the start. A brilliant defensive and attacking team display with all 11 outfield players finding the net.

Lucy Blenkinship top scored with eight, while there were also goals for Amelie Perkins (6), Zianna Wright (6), Harriet Dickens (4), Phillipa Danielson (2), Amelie Cornell (1), Hannah Pyper (1), Lucy Bullock (1), Lily Ross (1), Juliett Lyons (1) and Isobelle Robb (1).

Game 3, GB v Malta

Great Britain’s U19 women battled their way to a 13-8 (4-1, 4-2, 1-4, 4-1) victory against Malta in their third game at the European Championships on Sunday evening. After an excellent start, which saw Great Britain race into an early 4-1 lead – then 8-3 at the turnaround – Malta hit back in the third to close the gap to one. Captain Harriet Dickens helped put Great Britain back in control just before the final break, firing in to make it 9-7. In the fourth, Amelie Perkins struck twice to extend the lead to four, and another goal from Dickens firmly ended Malta’s hopes of a comeback. The result takes Great Britain to the summit of Group D after two wins – against Bulgaria and Malta – and a loss on penalties to Germany.

Captain Harriet Dickens led the scoring against Malta with five, while there were also goals for Amelie Perkins (3), Zianna Wright (2), Amelie Cornell (2) and Lucy Bullock (1).

Game 4, GB v Turkey

Great Britain’s U19 women fought their way to a dramatic 12-11 (2-2, 4-4, 4-2, 2-3) victory against Türkiye in their final preliminary game at the European Championships on Tuesday evening. With the scores locked at 6-6 at half-time, Great Britain came out strong in the third and managed to edge in front and ultimately take the three points. Türkiye battled back to 11-11 late in the fourth, but Lucy Blenkinship was the hero, completing her hat-trick with what proved to be the winner with 1:21 remaining.

Captain Harriet Dickens continued her fine form in Zagreb, leading the scoring with four, while goals from Hannah Pyper (3), Amelie Perkins (1) and Isobelle Robb (1) also helped secure the victory.

The win sees Great Britain finish as Group D runners-up, after three wins – against Bulgaria, Malta and Türkiye – and a loss on penalties to Germany.

Game 5, Netherlands v GB

Great Britain’s U19 women will contest the 9th-12th semifinals after losing 14-5 (6-2, 2-2, 5-1, 1-0) to Netherlands in the last-16 of the European Championships on Wednesday evening. Against a strong Dutch side, captain Harriet Dickens (1), Lucy Blenkinship (1), Amelie Perkins (1), Lily Ross (1) and Hannah Pyper (1) scored the goals for Great Britain, who now turn their attention to finishing ninth.

Game 6, GB v Slovakia

Great Britain’s U19 women will contest the 9th/10th classification final at the European Championships after winning an epic battle with Slovakia 15-14 (4-4, 4-4, 3-4, 4-2) on Thursday morning. Both teams traded blows throughout, with the lead changing hands constantly, but Great Britain emerged triumphant at the end of a fiercely-contested 32 minutes. Trailing 14-13 late in the fourth with just 71 seconds remaining, Lucy Blenkinship was once again Great Britain’s hero, firing in twice to complete her hat-trick and seal another memorable victory in Zagreb.

Amelie Perkins also had a game to remember, top scoring with seven, while Harriet Dickens (2), Amelie Cornell (1), Zianna Wright (1) and Hannah Pyper (1) were also among the goals.

Game 7, GB v Germany

Great Britain’s U19 women are celebrating in Zagreb this afternoon after a thrilling 9-8 (1-3, 4-2, 3-1, 1-2) victory against Germany in the 9th/10th final at the European Championships. A determined performance from Great Britain saw them fight back from a slow start to dominate the next two quarters and ultimately get revenge for the penalty shootout loss to Germany in the group stage. There was a nervy finale as Germany pulled it back to 8-8 midway through the fourth, but Amelie Perkins fired in the winner with 1:48 remaining, much to the delight of the travelling support. Captain Harriet Dickens and Perkins led the scoring with four each, while Amelie Cornell (1) was also on target.

Congratulations to the whole squad – including goalkeepers Zara Christie and Sophie Leveridge – and all the coaches for five wins from seven games, scoring 93 goals and only one loss in regular time and massive thanks for all the fantastic support in Zagreb and back home.
