We mourn the passing of Fred Holehouse, a stalwart of the English Water Polo club game -

Fred and Pam tying the knot!

We take this opportunity to report the passing of Fred Holehouse, the co-founder and President of Invicta Water Polo Club. Fred was a stalwart of the English Water Polo club game and an inspiration to a generation of players and volunteers in Kent Water Polo and beyond. With the kind permission of Invicta Water Polo we reproduce below their recent tribute to him and his legacy.

Fred died peacefully after a long illness surrounded by his family. His water polo loves were Bexley WPC and Invicta. In addition, Fred was a driving force behind the development of Kent water polo serving as Kent water polo manager for many years.

Many Invicta players will remember Fred’s legendary newsletters particularly in the days of home and away fixtures. Fred often used to say he was Britain’s greatest ever uncapped goalkeeper, we can all vouch that he was an imposing figure between the sticks. Anyone who has played for or been associated with Invicta owes a great deal to Fred as his hard work and support has enabled the players to play at the highest level in GB.

Fred will be greatly missed by us all. Our thoughts are with Pam and the family at this sad time.

Fred’s life will be celebrated at 2:30pm on Tues 27th August at Hawkinge Crematorium

  1. Mavis Bent MBE says:

I am very saddened to hear of Fred’s passing, as the write up dsys he was a very important part of English water polo through Invicta.
I used to deal with Fred being water polo secretary for Tyldesly and one memory is he always insisted that I booked the team in a pub at the side of Astley Colliery so his players could go and have a cuppa with the ex miners that were working keeping the heritage of the pit alive.
Fred and the team would be very proud of those men and many others ad now the pit head has been saved and is now a tourist attraction for our area.
    My condolences to Fred’s family
