Welcome to our September England water polo club news -

Welcome to our monthly news round-up in which we aim to showcase what has been going on in water polo clubs around the country.

Although August is usually a quiet month with teams winding down to go on holiday, this month we have been treated to excellent showcase water polo events organised by MANUP! Events.  The first event was on Saturday 31st July at Liverpool’s Albert Dock, followed by Media City, Salford Quays on Saturday 7th August, and a junior Competition at Nantwich outdoor pool on Sunday 15th August.  All of these events were well attended and provided an excellent opportunity for athletes to participate in competitive tournaments.

On 31st July, ten men’s teams took to the water in Albert Dock.  The combined Penguin/Oxford team won the trophy with Bridgefield coming second and Worcester third.

On 7th August it was the turn of Salford Quays.  Ten men’s and six women’s teams entered the competition.

The play was fast and furious with short, 6-a-side games of 8 minutes continuous play and no centre pass. Congratulations to Sedgefield Men who beat Rotherham in the final to take the cup, and Sheffield Women who won the women’s cup.

On 18th August the juniors’ tournament took place at Nantwich Lido.  The weather was not kind but water polo players (and officials) are a hardy lot!

Beautiful British weather in Nantwich!

Congratulations to Northampton Water Polo club 2005’s who beat Bolton, Sedgefield, Bridgefield, Liverpool and Tyldesley to win the event!

Behind the scenes training continues.  This month Sevenoaks Water Polo club have enjoyed their largest turnout for training so far this year with juniors and seniors in the pool.

Last month we featured the Exeter v Southampton games.  What we didn’t appreciate at the time was that these were the first two matches ever to be held at the Winchester 50m pool.

We have also learned that a new club has been set up based at the pool – Winchester Water Polo Club.  The club has men’s and women’s training sessions and is planning to start a junior squad as soon as the necessary equipment arrives.  Please keep us informed of how you are doing, we look forward to following your adventures!

City of Manchester Water Polo club will be running their 3rd annual sponsored outdoor swim on Sunday 12th September at Sale Water Park.  This is a great fundraising event for the club – do go along if you can to swim, buy cake and join the fun!

Next month we are looking forward to… the start of BWPL!  Let’s hope this heralds a return to something like normality!

That’s it for this month.   If your club has any news you would like us to showcase please contact me at ah@waterpoloengland.org
