GBR Senior Mens Teams

For the first two decades of the 20th century, the Great Britain Men’s team was regarded as the best Water Polo team in the world. The Great Britain Senior Men’s team dominated the sport internationally, winning Olympic Gold medals in 1900, 1908, 1912, 1916, and 1920.

More recently, the Great Britain Senior Men’s team competed in the 2012 Olympic Games, placing 5th in their group.  However, UK Sport funding for the Great Britain Senior teams was cut from £4.5 million to nil following the 2012 Olympic Games, and the Great Britain Senior Men’s team was disbanded.

Five years later in 2017, the emergence of a new group of young GBR senior players resulted in a GBR team under the auspices of British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) entering the 2017 World University Games (WUGs) in Chinese Taipei and the return by GBR Senior Men to LEN and FINA competitions.

Great Britain finished their World Cup Division Two campaign on a high with a hard-fought 13-12 (3-4, 3-1, 6-3, 1-4) victory over Portugal on Sunday afternoon in Malta. Theo Nousios’ squad took control after the first quarter, but had to dig deep in the fourth to secure seventh place overall, as the Portuguese fought back to level late on. Izzy Howe was the hero, sending in an exquisite lob shot with 1:07 remaining to win the game.
