ENG U17 junior women’s EU Nations team announced! -

We are delighted to publish a detailed update, and selection information, for the England U17 junior women’s squad, from the recently appointed Head Coach, Sarah Dunsbee and Assistant Coach, Cara Saunders.

With a congested water polo calendar, Sarah and her squad have just 3 training slots before their EU Nations event starts in Brno in the Czech Republic on 30 March 2018 so preparation time is limited, but the group are building upon the work of the National Academy from which all of the U17 athletes, born 2002 and younger, are drawn and where they were assessed towards the end of 2017.

The entire U17 squad was brought together for the first time on Sunday 14 January for a review by Sarah, her coaching team and National Academy Manager, Norman Leighton. The day went well, and coaches were generally pleased with the standard of athletes.

Sarah reports that while there is much work to do on technique, tactical play and game awareness, the players worked hard and were a credit to themselves and their club coaches. With limited training time available before the EU Nations event, a team has now been selected to represent England, which gives due consideration to commitment to training and availability of players for the event.

From a 25-player squad, 15 players have been selected to travel to Czech Republic, all of whom will be making their international debut. Given that the EU Nations event is for 2001s, the England EU Nations team will be competing against players who are older and more experienced.

Sarah says, “The coaches and athletes along with Swim England’s Water Polo Management Group are aware this will be a tough weekend for the girls selected but the experience gained will very much help the development of the programme for this age group.  Following this event further assessment of potential athletes will be undertaken and successful athletes added to the squad.  A full training programme is in place as we develop through to next year’s EU Nations and then LEN European Championships”.

A training schedule has been issued to all squad members with the expectation that athletes must meet the following training criteria:

  • A minimum total of 12 hours of training (mandatory)
  • A minimum of 4 water polo hours 4 (mandatory)
  • A minimum of 4 land training hours (this can include training within other sports)
  • A minimum of 4 swim hours (this may be replaced by water polo, if quality is good)

Many congratulations to the following team of 15 who have been selected to represent England at the junior women’s EU Nations event in Brno, CZE March 30th to April 1st 2018
