The start of the New Year means the start of phase two of the British Water Polo League with many clubs participating in important matches.

Congratulations go to Watford Saxons who won promotion to Championship 4 last weekend with wins against Sheffield Dolphins, Invicta Marlins and Coventry.

The Super five teams played their first matches at the splendid Aldershot Garrison sports pool.  There was a shock defeat for the reigning Super 5 women’s champions when City of Manchester were defeated by Liverpool Lizzards thus bringing to an end Manchester’s amazing record of 26 matches without loss.

Great to see Penguin Emperors starting their BWPL campaign in Championship 2 with three wins from three.  Well done ladies!

We mentioned last month that Hillingdon were starting a girls’ training session.  Great to see that these sessions have now started.  Excellent news for the sport and for women and girls in sport.

Watford U12s have been in action in the Winter League this month travelling to Chelmsford.  For 8 members of the squad this was their first ever water polo match.  They played three matches against tough opposition and did very well winning won one match and coming second in the other two.  A great outing for a young team.  Can’t wait to follow their progress.

From a young squad to one slightly older! Congratulations to the Surrey men’s over 50s team who have been crowned champions in a tournament against two other counties.

Finally, we would like to congratulate Colin Walsh on being appointed President of the English Schools Swimming Association.  Colin will be very well known to many of our readers as a Team Manager for various GB squads and City of Manchester Hawks.  He also runs the pool deck for many tournaments.  He has been with ESSA for over 21 years and well deserves this accolade.  Thank you Colin for all you do for our sport!
